 A Welcome from the Principal
Thank you for visiting the website of Armstrong School! Built in 1969, Armstrong
is a primary building which serves approximately 200 students in early childhood
through second grade.
Armstrong offers a variety of educational experiences for its students. Placing
primary emphasis on the language arts skills of reading and writing, our
students are supported by both a literacy program and an at-risk reading
program. In addition, guided reading is utilized in all first and second grade
classrooms as a means of individualizing reading instruction and practice to the
specific skill levels of each student.
Math and science are additional areas of emphasis at Armstrong. In math, we
balance daily practice of foundational skills and concepts with open-ended
mathematical problem solving. In science, we aim to engage students in hands on
activities that expose them to scientific skills and concepts while also
encouraging higher level thinking skills.
In addition to the subject areas of reading, writing, math, and science, one of
Armstrong's goals is to increase our ability
to differentiate instruction in order to better meet the needs of individual
students. We have a variety of initiatives to work toward this goal,
including curriculum mapping, flexible grouping of students, and peer
observations. Armstrong has a "Prairie in Progress" located in the front of the school.
It is used in a variety of educational ways and is enjoyed by all. We
invite you to take a look, beginning with the sampling of prairie photos below.
