Each year, students
are required to participate in standardized testing given by the
state. For many of our students, it is appropriate for them to
participate in IAA, the Illinois Alternate Assessment. Depending on
grade level, students are tested in reading, math, and/or science.
Students are asked 10-12 questions related to various concepts in
each subject area. Students are given answer choices, and are scored
based on whether they can answer the question with or without
assistance. The testing generally takes 15-20 minutes, and is
completed individually by the teacher.
Instead
of IAA, taking the ISAT may be appropriate for some of our students.
This is the test that all regular division students take. This test
is given at grade level and requires students to answer multiple
choice questions, and give written responses. Students can be given
accommodations such as having tests read to them, the student reads
the test aloud to someone, extra time, small group testing, use of a
calculator, or having someone write written responses for the
student.
Whether
your student participates in IAA or ISAT will be discussed at the
IEP meeting. There are certain rules that the school district must
follow when deciding which students qualify for IAA and which
students must take ISAT. If you have questions about this testing,
feel free to contact me at the school. If I cannot answer your
question, I will direct you to our special education coordinator or
director.
