How to Choose Books

One of the best ways to choose a book is by listening to your child's interest.  Ask your child what he/she enjoys reading.  You may also ask him/her about interesting areas of study in school.

  • Have your child look closely at the title and illustrations on the cover of the book.  Then you can read the first few pages of the book with your child to see if it sounds like a "good read".
  • Another important think to consider when selecting a book is variety.   Literature is full of variety.  Encourage your child to investigate many types of literature such as fiction, non-fiction, poetry, biography, mystery, flocculate, etc.
  • Always remember to consider the difficulty of reading.  If the selection is too difficult, your child may become overly frustrated. Although, more difficult selections might be good choices for a read aloud.  You want to make sure the book selection will build success.
  • Your child's teacher or school librarian may also have some good suggestions.  Don't forget your local public library and bookstores!
