Be an Example! When your child sees you reading the mail, a newspaper, a food label, or novel, he/she will want to read. Your good examples show your child that reading is an important part of life. Share your own reading with your child! Encouragement and Understanding Do you remember when your child was first learning to say difficult words? Did he/she ever say "basghetti" instead of "spaghetti"? You probably didn't stop to correct your child repeatedly but praised him/her for the effort. Your patience, understanding, and encouragement are an important part of helping to build your child's confidence in reading. Good readers make mistakes and take chances. Constant correction can often hinder instead of help.
