If your child tries several of these options and is unable to make sense, you may give him/her the word and go on. Taking too much time on a problem word can interfere with your child's understanding of the material. What if my child reads something incorrectly? As you know, no one is perfect. Good readers don't always read every word that is printed on the page correctly. It's O.K., and in fact it's natural, as long as it does not keep your child from understanding what he or she is reading. For example: The sentence reads: It is a gloomy, rainy day. A reader might say: It is a gloomy, raining day.
The second attempt changes
the meaning of what is read. In a case like this, you can pause and
ask your child if what he/she read makes sense.
