What If My Child Gets "Stumped"?
If your child is unable to read a particular word, wait a few seconds to give him/her an opportunity to use different clues or strategies that he/she knows.  Many times a child is asked to "sound it out", but looking at the letter sounds in a word is only one way to "tackle" a tough word.  Encourage your child to do one or more of the following things to help problem solve words that he/she does not know...

Look for a clue in the picture.
Ask yourself what makes good sense.
Start the sentence again, leaving the word blank.
Read on and then come back.

You can also print the Strategy Bookmark to use at home!

If your child tries several of these options and is unable to make sense, you may give him/her the word and go on.  Taking too much time on a problem word can interfere with your child's understanding of the material.

What if my child reads something incorrectly?

As you know, no one is perfect.  Good readers don't always read every word that is printed on the page correctly.  It's O.K., and in fact it's natural, as long as it does not keep your child from understanding what he or she is reading.

For example:

The sentence reads:  It is a gloomy, rainy day.

A reader might say:

It is a gloomy, raining day.
It is a gloomy, running day.

The second attempt changes the meaning of what is read.  In a case like this, you can pause and ask your child if what he/she read makes sense.
