Title 1 Reading Teacher

Title 1 programs are funded by the Federal Government.

Woodrow Wilson's Title 1 program is designed to help beginning readers with reading strategies.  As the Title 1 teacher at Woodrow Wilson School, I teach reading to kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students.  I sometimes work with students during their reading block in the classroom.  I also pull out small groups of students for additional reading help .

Reading Strategies that Work!

The following are reading strategies that your child is learning at school.

  • Look at the picture

  • Look at the first letter of the word

  • Get your mouth ready to say the beginning sound

  • Say the beginning sound

  • Say the ending sound

  • Try different vowel sounds

  • Find the "little words" inside the longer word

  • Skip the unfamiliar word and read on to gather more information

  • Reread

  • Think of a word with the same sound

  • Make meaningful substitutions

  • Recognize when something does not make sense

  • Self-correct after making an error

  • Read for meaning, not just word calling

  • Ask questions and answer questions about what is read

Activities to do at Home

  • Read to you child everyday!

  • Visit the local library.

  • Be positive and don't over correct.

  • Keep a book bag in your car.

  • Use magnetic letters on your refrigerator to make and read words.

  • Ask your child what he/she learned at school.

  • Play rhyming games.

  • Let your child help write the grocery list.

  • Together keep a journal of school and home events.

  • Shut off the TV and play board games with your child.
