Title 1 programs are funded by the Federal Government. Woodrow Wilson's Title 1 program is designed to help beginning readers with reading strategies. As the Title 1 teacher at Woodrow Wilson School, I teach reading to kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students. I sometimes work with students during their reading block in the classroom. I also pull out small groups of students for additional reading help . |
Reading Strategies that Work!
The following are reading strategies that your child is learning at school.

Look at the picture

Look at the first letter of the word

Get your mouth ready to say the beginning sound

Say the beginning sound

Say the ending sound

Try different vowel sounds

Find the "little words" inside the longer word

Skip the unfamiliar word and read on to gather more information

Reread

Think of a word with the same sound

Make meaningful substitutions

Recognize when something does not make sense

Self-correct after making an error

Read for meaning, not just word calling

Ask questions and answer questions about what is read
Activities to do at Home

Read to you child everyday!

Visit the local library.

Be positive and don't over correct.

Keep a book bag in your car.

Use magnetic letters on your refrigerator to make and read words.

Ask your child what he/she learned at school.

Play rhyming games.

Let your child help write the grocery list.

Together keep a journal of school and home events.

Shut off the TV and play board games with your child.
